‘Right stuff, right bin’ campaign to help residents recycle with confidence
A campaign has been launched to help Charnwood residents recycle more.
Charnwood Borough Council which collects recycling from 77,000 homes in the area has launched ‘Right Stuff, Right Bin’, a campaign to help residents increase their knowledge around recycling to ensure their efforts do not go to waste.
Around 40 tonnes of waste are ending up in the wrong bin each week in Charnwood. Sometimes this can lead to recycling going to landfill.
The launch of ‘Right stuff, right bin’ marks the start of WRAP’s Recycle Week which takes places between October 16 – October 22.
Cllr Anne Gray, the Council’s lead member for waste said: “We want households to have the information they need so they can recycle with confidence.
“Our residents are trying their best to recycle the correct items, but they may be missing an opportunity to recycle even more because they are not aware of the wide range of materials which can be recycled. It is also equally as important for people to understand what cannot be recycled to avoid contamination of loads.
“Clearly, the aim is to reduce and reuse before recycling to prevent the amount of waste being produced. We know that despite our best efforts, sometimes producing waste is simply unavoidable. That’s why it’s important to ensure everything which can be recycled goes in the green wheelie bin resulting in less waste going to landfill.
“I would encourage residents to have a look at the campaign. If every household in the borough made a small change or improvement to their recycling habits, together we can recycle right in Charnwood.”
‘Right stuff, right bin’ will share key information and offer top tips to give residents the confidence to recycle right. The campaign will also highlight some of the common items in the household which end up in the black bin but are recyclable. Items include:
Clean aluminium foil
Empty aerosol cans
Clear plastic bags (including bread and vegetable bags)
Plastic cellophane and cling film
Each week, around 325 tonnes of recycling is collected in Charnwood and taken to Casepak, a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) for sorting. However, on occasion a lorry load of recycling can be rejected due to it being contaminated by non-recyclable and dirty materials such as food, nappies and textiles.
