Fun of the fair celebrated in Loughborough for 801st year
Thousands of Charnwood residents and visitors enjoyed all the thrills of Loughborough Fair as it returned to the town for its 801st year.
The fair, which is operated by Charnwood Borough Council, welcomed over 170 attractions to the town centre.
The four-day event saw the return of much-loved rides including the dodgems and waltzers along with a host of food and drink stalls.
Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Jennifer Tillotson, officially open the fair with the reading of the proclamation and then greeted stall owners, showmen and members of the public as she toured the fair.
Cllr Jenny Bokor, the Council’s lead member for Loughborough, said: “The fair was once again a fantastic spectacle as those from all over Charnwood and further afield came to visit the attractions.
“It is great to see all the support and the smiles on the faces of families and friends as they enjoyed all the entertainment on offer.
“The fair is also important to the local economy as it brings thousands of people into the town every year and it’s heritage, stretching back over eight centuries, also makes it attractive to visitors.
“A huge thank you must also go to all the showman and everyone that works tirelessly to make the fair happen. I already can’t wait for next year!”
The first official Charter for the fair was granted to the Lord of the Manor, Hugh le Despencer, in 1221 by King Henry III. The fair was then held on St. Peter’s Day.
