Time running out to register to vote
The last chance to register to vote for May’s local elections in Charnwood is Monday April 17.
Residents in the borough have until midnight on Monday April 17 to make sure they are registered to vote.
Charnwood Borough Council has 52 councillors across 24 wards with all seats being up for election on Thursday May 4. Any contested seats in all of the 27 parish and town councils in the borough will also be up for election.
There are 133,096 people on the electoral register in Charnwood, so most residents are already registered. However, if you are not registered, visit the Government’s website.
Rob Mitchell, returning officer said: “The deadline for residents to register to vote ahead of the local elections is fast approaching.
“I would urge residents who are not already registered to apply sooner rather than later. Although the deadline is April 17, if you leave it until the last minute and there are any issues with your application then you may not be registered in time to have your say in the local elections.”
Time is also running out to apply for a postal vote. Residents who want to vote by post need to apply by 5pm on Tuesday April 18.

Residents visiting a polling station to vote in the local elections will need to show an acceptable form of photo ID. The new requirement has been introduced by the UK Government.
Residents without one of the accepted forms of ID will be able to apply for free ID called a Voter Authority Certificate which can only be used in polling stations.
The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate in time for the local elections is April 25 at 5pm. Residents should make sure they are registered to vote before applying.
