Make sure you are registered to vote in May’s local elections
Charnwood residents have until midnight on Monday, April 17 to register to vote in the local elections in May.

Charnwood Borough Council has 52 councillors across 24 wards with all seats being up for election on Thursday, May 4.

Most residents are currently registered with over 130,000 people on the electoral register in Charnwood. However, if you are not currently registered to vote in the local elections, visit: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

For the first time, photo ID will be required when you visit a polling station to vote. This new requirement has been introduced by the UK Government.

It means voters across England will be required to show an accepted form of photo ID when voting at polling stations for local elections.

Residents without one of the suitable forms of ID will be able to apply for free ID called a Voter Authority Certificate which can only be used in polling stations.

The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate in time for the local elections is April 25 at 5pm. Residents should make sure they are registered to vote before applying. You can find out more details about voter ID on the Council’s website: www.charnwood.gov.uk/voter_id

Rob Mitchell, Returning Officer, said: “I would encourage all residents across Charnwood to make sure that they are registered to vote and if not, register in good time before the deadline on April 17. Registration is simple and easy so don’t miss out on your chance to vote”.
