Views sought on strategy to help Charnwood tackle climate change
Views are being sought on a climate change strategy for Charnwood which is being developed by the borough council.
The Climate Change Strategy 2023-30 sets out how the Council will help lead local and work in partnership with communities, residents, organisations, and businesses to reduce emissions and help look after the environment. It also references the Council’s existing efforts to reduce its own carbon footprint.
A consultation has been launched on the strategy and people are being encouraged to have a say.
Cllr Roy Rollings, the Council’s lead member for Carbon Neutral 2030, said: “I am really pleased to be inviting comments on our draft Climate Change Strategy 2023-30.
“This strategy provides a clear path for the Council to follow and sets out the action we can take to support efforts to tackle climate change. This is something everyone needs to play a role in and there will be a clear need for many people and organisations to work together to tackle climate change and make a difference.
“The Council has been playing its part in reducing carbon emissions for many years. We have reduced our own carbon footprint by over a third and have encouraged others to reduce their energy use. We also have committed to seeing more trees planted and recently planted more than 14,000 trees to create the Hathern Community Woodland.
“The Climate Change Strategy 2023-30 is important to the Council and its commitment to caring for the local environment and that’s why we would welcome your views.”
The draft Climate Change Strategy and its associated action plan sets out the Council’s commitment to take local action on climate change.
The strategy’s seven themes include:
Transport
Planning, Land Use and Biodiversity
Buildings and Heating (energy)
Resources including Food and Waste
Business and Economy
Governance and Finance
Partnership and Communication
The strategy’s action plan includes encouraging businesses and communities to reduce energy use; working with partners to bring sustainable benefits to communities; reducing the Council’s own carbon footprint by using more electric vehicles and making buildings more energy efficient and working with partners to reduce flooding in the borough.
